The Achuar people in southeast Ecuador live in a part of the Amazon rain forest as pristine today as it was a thousand years ago. In order to protect their rainforest from exploitation and avoid the environmental and cultural devastation suffered by their indigenous neighbors only a few hundred miles away, they have formed alliances with environmental protection agencies in the outside world seeking to gain official recognition as a bioreserve, closed to exploitation.
