WOW. The movie is very slow but then the ending! *BAM!* I liked it a lot and have been thinking about it since...disturbing. Give it a chance.

I love French movies (and other European ones too) for their realistic portrayal of real people, so different from the Hollywood style of film making. I'm not an expert on teenage girls' sexuality but having lived amongst them for many years I can attest to the absolute realism of the actions, dialogue and feelings shown in this film. The fact that a lot of the dialogue is explicit and the sex certainly is (sexy but not erotic) is just the way it is in real life. There are no masks here for any of the characters, children or adults and thus I found the film gripping. Try the alternate ending and see what you think. Either ring true to the character's motivations and expressed desire.

This movie treats the viewer as an adult; it does not omit or gloss over events which other movies would. The approach to sexuality unfolds quickly but also at the same time, quite a bit more slowly and naturally. One must watch it to see how that works. The controversy about the movie is nothing new as far as movie controversy goes. We do not want to see ourselves in the movies and so we find some scenes "offensive". It is actually not graphic at all, and quite tastefully done while still being adult.

Please be warned, this move is VERY graphic. I expected more from this movie, it left me feeling depress.

Not bad for Breillat, which is faint praise, but any praise whatsoever for her oeuvre is noteworthy. This one, at least, is accessible, although the titular character is singularly inexpressive. The point being made here, I believe, is the various forms of coersion, dishonesty and violence visited upon women by men in order to have sex. What's less clear is what's being said about physical beauty. But be warned, both these girls (the fatso and her pretty sister) are no pleasure, regardless of what Breillat says in the interview included in the "special features".

I am surprised that this movie made it to the Criterion list....skipped through most of it....

Do not even waste your time with this movie. Nothing happens outside of making the viewer feel uncomfortable and bored for 99% of the movie. Then everyone is killed the end. Not even remotely worth the effort.
