Entertaining and breathtaking, but a little on the short side, or so it feels anyway.

I checked this movie out on a whim because it was on the 2nd floor but I'm glad I found it. What an amazing documentary! It's located in the children's section on the 1st floor but I think all humans of all ages should see this film.

It's no secret that back in the 1960s and 70s when Disney Studios were filming their nature shows that they deliberately set things up to have wild animals attack, fight, and, yes, kill each other, all for the sake of entertainment._____ I was assured that this sort of cruel pratice was purely "old school" and did not take place in "Earth". If that's true (and I hope it is), then that means that the patient camera-crew must've literally sat around for days, waiting for some sort of wildlife confrontation to take place._____ If nothing else, "Earth" certainly opened up this city boy's eyes to the vast number of creatures that we, as humans, are sharing this planet with._____ Though "Earth's" narrative made no mention of it, but, it is still quite obvious as you look around, we, homo sapiens (who know better), certainly aren't doing a very good job of sharing this planet's resources with our fellow creatures. Are we? - Always taking the lion's share, so to speak, for ourselves._____ Oops! I'm sorry. How dare I bring up stuff like that!? I'm just supposed to view "Earth" as a cutesy, little nature show, and nothing else. Right?

This is essentially a Coles Notes version of the BBC's Planet Earth series. This is 90 minutes. The full Planet Earth series runs some 550 minutes.

While this makes for a great TV demo disc, don't cheat yourself (or your kids) by watching this instead of the full Planet Earth series. Think of it as an extended trailer.

Beautiful, scenic views of exotic and faraway locations. See short stories of 3 main animal groups: polar bears, whales or elephants; mixed in with other animal footage and scenery, and talk about global warming. If you want in-depth reports of the 3 main animals, you should borrow another dvd. The scenery and time-lapse photography, however is magnificent and I would recommend this movie just for that. Nice narration by James Earl Jones. Watch the bonus footage of how they filmed the movie over 5 years and all the people involved in making the film. Good for all ages.
