Unfortunately this movie about the boring life of a homeless lost kid is so poorly written and paced that the movie itself is even more boring and slow.

As with her previous film "Old Joy", Reichardt manages to capture the perspective of a socially marginalized outsider with a degree of authenticity and sympathy few -if any- other filmmakers can match. Riechardt's highly realistic aesthetic is believable, but usually not compelling: As is often the case in reality, the narrative is often so ambiguous and the pacing so plodding that the film is sometimes as boring as everyday life. The result is a film that is highly admirable but only sporadically compelling.

This isn't a highly polished, fast-paced Hollywood film and that is part of its charm. We are all on a journey and there are journeys within journeys. This film explores a moment in time, a small part of a person's journey of self-reliance, improvement, and discovery, as well as just gritty survival and the sometimes difficult decisions we make and living with the consequences.

Boring waste of time.

Kelly Reichardt’s pessimistic look at one young woman’s disenchantment with the American Dream is suffused with so much angst and disappointment that at times it is almost unbearable to watch—even the otherwise beautiful scenery is tainted with mud while the flowery doodles adorning a homemade logbook seem pathetic. And, even more significant, everything everywhere comes with a price tag attached to it. As Wendy desperately searches for a way out of her predicament she comes up against the usual stock characters, each representing one facet of of society: a group of vagrants find some solace in each other’s misery; a kindly security guard offers what little he has; and a clean-cut grocery clerk’s zealous adherence to “The Rules” marks the beginning of Wendy’s tribulations. Not all the elements click (a phone call home comes across as stagey) and at times Reichardt is a little heavy-handed with the pathos, but thanks to a believable script which favours realism over sentimentality and a convincingly downbeat performance by lead Michelle Williams (sans make-up and shampoo), "Wendy and Lucy" is a small tragedy with enormous implications.

A great story about the bond between Wendy and her dog Lucy. Now if you have never been a dog owner, maybe this movie won't be for you, Michelle Williams plays a homeless girl trying to get to Alaska from her home in Oregon. She is so good, you forget she is acting, and think you are watching a documentary. There are some harrowing scenes of life of a young single woman trying to travel with barely any money. Those who commented that the story was dull probably did not connect with the bond of the Lucy to Wendy. It is a small independent movie. Probably few people will see it. It does show some of life's problems for a homeless girl. You be the judge of whether you care about a wonderful dog and its owner. To me they were precious!

This is an very good, independent film about how much, or more likely, how little, Americans will help one another. The last scene of Wendy alone captures the alienation and loneliness of America to-day.

2 of 5 stars. A zen movie which captures the desolation of poverty, loss, and the motives of life. "When The Cat's Away" is a more entertaining lost-and-(maybe)found movie.

Good enough road story, Lucy is the dog. Too short. Very good acting from Lucy.
