Many film enthusiasts go even further than simply dismissing Michael Powell's later films as they do his early ones - they often downright trash them. But Age of Consent is a real work of brilliance. A laid-back, partially comedic, partially dramatic script about a burnt-out artist (played wonderfully by James Mason) trying to rekindle has passion for life on a remote island is a real joy to watch, but what may be more interesting are the subtly radical editing techniques employed by Powell. It's so subtle and done so effectively that it's easy to not even notice, but shots and scenes begin and end in fascinating ways here. But the main attraction here is the visual appeal, which can be overwhelming. Australia's Queensland Reef is captured in all of its colorful glory by a man who just may have had the best eye for location photography in film history.
