Rocky Balboa is a struggling boxer trying to make the big time. He works in a meat factory in Philadelphia for a meager wages so he also earns extra cash as a debt collector. When heavyweight champion Apollo Creed visits Philadelphia, his managers want to set up an exhibition match between Creed and a struggling boxer. The promoters are touting the fight as a chance for a "nobody" to become a "somebody". The match is supposed to be easily won by Creed, but someone forgot to tell Rocky, who sees this as his only shot at the big time.

Great boxing and sports movie. my favorite of the Rocky movies, but the second is just as good.

Hard to believe it won stuffy academy award back then. However, I only watched All the President's Men within my lifetime.

After watching Southpaw and Creed much too close together during the past year, I decided I'm done watching any new boxing movies. Rocky and The Fighter are the two classics I will watch again. Both are overly long, but the writing, performances and music are very good. Rocky has the edge, of course, since it came first, has a sweet love story and there is a great story behind the film--how Sylvester Stallone wrote it and negotiated his starring role. I have no interest in boxing, so my rating of 4 stars is high praise. Rocky is rated PG.

Great boxing/sports movie. Not usually my type but I did enjoy this one!

Very touching and inspirational movie with a truly exciting climax. Stallone was an unknown when this movie was made--they offered him 350,000 dollars for the screenplay and were going to hire Ryan O'Neil for the lead. He turned down the offer and did it for next to nothing in return for the chance to play the lead. The studio said okay but you can't make it for more than a million dollars. The real life situation mirrored what was happening in the movie and the film was a huge success and won best picture and director oscars. Stallone was nominated for best actor and screenplay and deservedly so.

Definitely a classic. I loved the inspirational message throughout the series. Getting back up, not giving up and never underestimating yourself. A strong motivational message. Very well done. Highly Recommend.

I got bored, very long-feeling movie. Well-known montage sequence doesn't happen until 1hr30min in. Characters not really interesting and often hard to understand (literally!--mumbling all the time).

42 years later, the film still resonates---the story of a down and outer, who takes his shot at the title along the way finding personal redemption and love set in Philadelphia during 1976, our nations centennial. Memorable lines, characters, and a soundtrack that won't quit, this is a film that's the gold standard of the sports genre. The anti-thesis of Fat City--John Huston's love letter to the "sweet science".

Sylvester Stallone star and wrote the screenplay to "Rocky". As the description of the movie says "He is a million to one shot for the heavyweight crown". Composer Bill Conte should be given credit for a soundtrack that inspires Rocky and thus the audience as well. One of the best boxing movies of all time! Beware of the Rocky movies that followed. They were not on par with the original.
