Buddhism Without Beliefs

A Contemporary Guide to Awakening

Book - 1997

This concise and beautiful book demystifies Buddhism by explaining, without jargon or obscure terminology, what awakening is and how to practice it. What Buddha taught, says Stephen Batchelor, is not something to believe in but something to do. . . something that can be practiced every day.

A well-written book, designed for those who would like to re-think Gautama as a forerunner to modern Atheist/Agnostic thinking. However such a view requires one to completely disregard who Gautama was, what point in history he lived in, or his actual beliefs regarding attaining Nirvana and how reincarnation works.

Perhaps not an ideal starting text for learning about such an historic religion, this book is nonetheless on my list of Buddhist books to recommend. Batchelor is honest, his experience is vast, and he is clearly wise. In particular, his passion for the Sage of the Shakyas shines through: this guy really, really loves the Buddha. And in that all Buddhists will find a kindred spirit. You'll especially enjoy the historical portions, I imagine, as I did. Buddhist atheism is real and here now, and because they are our brothers and sisters, if you're a Buddhist, of whatever variety, I highly recommend that you pick this up. Great, great book.

This is the BEST book on what Buddhism I have ever read (and I have read dozens). Simple, concise, clean and free of all the detritus added afterward as Buddha's teachings were revised to fit cultural and religious expectations over the millenia. The other best book on Buddhism is Batchelor's autobiography Confessions of a Buddhist Atheist. Both of these books are "must read" for anyone interested in Buddhism.
