"Leslie Caron plays Fanny, a fishmonger's daughter with eyes for the barkeeper's son, Marius (Horst Buchholz). She has a powerful rival: Marius yearns for a life at sea-- not one behind the bar with his blustery but devoted father Cesar (Charles Boyer). But after Fanny and Marius surrender to their desires, complications separate them-- and a solution comes from an unlikely source: the wise, aging sailmaker Panisse (Maurice Chevalier)."--Container.

As is often the case with our library, and others too, frequently the genre of movies is incorrect. This is not a musical. It's a charming and well made romantic drama-comedy, but no songs. It is partially based on a Broadway musical, but the film leaves out all the songs, using some of that material as background music.

What the film has going for it is Chevalier, Caron, and Boyer, all in top form. And the exteriors are shot on location in France.
