"In King Corn, Ian Cheney and Curt Ellis, best friends from college on the east coast, move to the heartland to learn where their food comes from. With the help of friendly neighbors, genetically modified seeds, nitrogen fertilizers, and powerful herbicides, they plant and grow a bumper crop of America's most productive, most subsidized grain on one acre of Iowa soil. But when they try to follow their pile of corn into the food system, what they find raises troubling questions about how we eat-- and how we farm."--container.

This was a fascinating look into the plight of the average Iowa corn farmer. To turn a profit and support themselves it's "go big or go home." Some startling statistics (like how corn derivatives, many genetically modified, are in 90% of the foods at the grocery store) really hit home. The protagonists are two city boys who move to Iowa (the very town their great-grandfathers were from), rent an acre of corn from a local farmer, and see what happens. From the planting to the harvesting to the selling, they are surprised at the intricacies of the enterprise they used to take from granted. Their side projects (like making corn syrup at home using sulfuric acid (!) made for interesting fodder along the way. Not as shocking a movie as "Fed Up!" but one that hones in on one of the largest and problematic industries today.
