This is a 1971 American melodrama directed by Mike Nichols.
In those days of the early 1970s, the general receptiveness by the public to frank discussion of sexual issues was sometimes at odds with local community standards.
A theatre in Albany, Georgia, showed the film.
On January 13, 1972, the local police served a search warrant on the theatre, and seized the film.
In March 1972, the theatre manager, Mr. Jenkins, was convicted of the crime of "distributing obscene material".
His conviction was upheld by the Supreme Court of Georgia.
On June 24, 1974, the U.S. Supreme Court found that the State of Georgia had gone too far in classifying material as obscene in view of its prior decision in Miller v. California, and overturned the conviction.
Compared to the pornogrphic, this is far from obscene material, but the film simply depicts the things far from serious material.
With today's general receptiveness in mind, however, I guess it is a good-for-nothing entertaining piece.

Ann-Margret received critical acclaim and her first Academy Award Nomination for her tour de force performance as Bobbie Templeton in Carnal Knowledge. While the entire cast gives outstanding performances it is hers that will leave viewers with a lasting impression of acting at its finest. The role of Bobbie Templeton is but one of her many great roles that established her as one of the great Hollywood actresses and a legend for all time. Bobbie Templeton is an attractive woman who men used and abused and wants nothing more in life than to be loved and have a family In this film (as of 1971) the never before subject matter of male to female heterosexuality so raw and realistically portrayed on film one i left aghast at the way some men so disregard and disrespect women. At the very least Carnal Knowledge and in particular Jack Nicholson's performance should act as a guide as how NOT to treat a woman. Carnal Knowledge was Mike Nichols fourth film of a career filled with many great films.

A bleak but realistic exposé from Mike Nichols on the puerile, competitive, empty objectification of women by Garfunkel and Nicholson from college days to middle age, and the descending dysfunction of their relationships with them over the years. Jack was great, but Ann Margret was even better. Wow... And damn straight -- to steal a quote from the film: "I wouldn't kick her out of bed!!!"

A very odd, and disjointed movie to say the least. While there is a plot submerged in the movie it could easily do with a bit of re-editing to make it more obvious.

Jonathan: "Alright, where the f*ck is my shoehorn? This place is a mess! There's not any food in the house; half the time you look like you fell out of bed! You spend more time in bed than any other human being past the age of 6 months than I ever heard of!" Bobbie: "The reason I sleep all day is because I can't stand my life!" Jonathan: WHAT LIFE?!?" Bobbie: "SLEEPING ALL DAY!!" Jonathan: "After that sorta thing I fall in love with ya all over again..." Bobbie (crying): "Marry me, Jonathan, please marry me..." Jonathan: "You're trying to kill me!" Bobbie: "Marriage isn't death." Jonathan: "Why now?" Bobbie: "Because two years ago, I slept... eight hours... A year ago it was twelve -- it's up to fifteen now; pretty soon it's gonna be twenty four!" Jonathan: "Whattya tryin' to do, scare me?" Bobbie: "I need a life!" Jonathan: "GET A JOB!" Bobbie: "I don't WANT a job, I want you..." Jonathan: "I'm taken, BY ME!!!"

Jonathan: "Get outta the house! Do something useful, goddammit! Bobbie: "You wouldn't let me work when I wanted to." Jonathan: "That was a year ago." Bobbie: "You throw a tantrum every time you call and I'm not home." Jonathan: "Look, sister, I'm out there in the jungle -- EIGHT HOURS A DAY!" Bobbie: "You wouldn't even let me canvas for Kennedy!" Jonathan: "You want a job? I got a job for ya. Fix up this pigsty! You get a pretty goddamned good salary for testing out this bed all day! You want an extra fifty dollars a week? Tryyy vacuuming. You want an extra hundred? Make this goddamned bed! Try opening some goddamned windows! That's why you can't stand up in here; THE GODDAMNED PLACE SMELLS LIKE A COFFIN!! ...Ohhh, Bobbie... you don't need me. Why do you let yourself in for this kind of abuse? Walk out! Leave me, please leave me... God's sake, I'd almost marry you if you'd leave me..."
