The movie was a better-looking than a better-listening movie. I couldn't make out half the dialogue. I'm beginnning to think most English language films should have a subtitle option, but especially those with English/Scotch/Welsh/Irish speakers. This version didn't have one.

Set in northern Scotland and using a palette of colours that goes from warm earth tones to bleak pastels, Rickman deftly weaves several seemingly disparate stories into one coherent meditation on life, grief, hope and the need to move forward. Emma Thompson and her mother are nothing short of phenomenal. The endless vistas of snow and the frozen sea are used to highlight a script that is profound while remaining natural. Absolutely beautiful
