Released in 1971 - THX 1138 is a futuristic tale in the "1984" vein about a robot-like society where sex is forbidden and everyone, pretty much, looks the same.
Its dull script is somewhat buoyed up by director George Lucas' reissuing this film in 2004 with upgraded visuals and set designs.
Should have watched this twice. On one viewing, this film confused me but I get most of what is going on. A controlling factor in the future and humans who know their place. Prime set up for a rebellion.
This is a cult classic.
I really wanted just another fifteen minutes to find out what happens next. Maybe a sequel to to answer some lingering questions. As it is, there is a lot to think about and it would seem that answers or closure is up to the imagination of the viewer.
I don't know, what do you think?
Set in the distant future - THX-1138 is a very 1984-ish tale (meaning that the story here follows similar lines to that of the movie '1984').
Yep, Big Brudder, I mean, Big Brother is at it again, watching, and listening, and watching, and watching. There's no escape from Big Brother's eyes and ears. They're everywhere!
(Is this the future that everyone's looking forward to!??)
All citizens are branded like cattle and their heads are shaved bald. Unsanctioned sex is a crime. Test-tube babies are the rage. Emotion-regulating drugs are imposed on everyone, including children, by the government.
These drugs have really screwy side-effects, which includes causing severe depression. And, so to counter this depression more drugs are pumped into the person. At the end of a mind-numbing day on the job, men come home, clamp a suction-device onto their peckers and get masturbated by a machine while watching some very boring, sexually stimulating (?) hologram-imagery..... And I ask you again - Is this the future that every-one's looking forward to!!???
Unfortunatley, THX-1138 (which was directed by George Lucas in 1971) is too slow-paced to hold one's attention or interest for very long. At times the dialogue seems confused (at least it was to me) or maybe I got to the point where I just didn't care what anyone said anymore.
*Note* - In 2004 this Sci-Fi picture's visuals were revised by Lucas and the film was reissued.
