A unique examination of the value of family over politics - the end of the film is a masterful blend of violence and hope for the future. The next chapter of this stoey would make a fascinating film.

Toshiro Mifune (三船敏郎) stars as Isaburo Sasahara, an aging swordsman living a quiet life until his clan lord orders that his son marry
the lord's mistress (司葉子), who has recently displeased the ruler.
During the powerful Tokugawa regime (徳川幕府) in Edo (江戸: present-day Tokyo), there were 264 lords or dimyo (大名).
These feudal lords ruled their clan and the people under them.
This story took place in Aizu-han (会津藩)---one of these Japanese clans in 1725.
Reluctantly, father and son (加藤剛) take in the woman.
To the family's surprise, the young couple fall in love, but the lord soon reverses his decision and demands the mistress's return.
Against all expectations, Isaburo and his son refuse, risking the destruction of their entire family and relatives,
and decide to take a stand against injustice.
This is a heart-wrenching and mind-blowing 121-minute drama you would have never heard of.
This DVD includes a 1993 interview with director Masaki KObayashi (小林正樹).

This movie starts slowly - but stay with it. Great cinematography and performances. It's a movie where decisions lead to inevitable, inescapable conclusions. Some really smart scenes that seem insignificant sneak up on you as the plot ramps up toward the conclusion. Mifune really is a truly amazing performer.
