"Alternating between the stories of Najmah, a 12-year-old Afghan girl, and Nusrat, a young American woman, this powerful, poignant novel depicts the emotional cost of the war in Afghanistan. Nusrat longs for the return of her husband, Faiz, who left to open a medical clinic in Afghanistan. Meanwhile, Najmah, whose mother and baby brother were killed by American bombs, desperately searches for her father and older brother, who were forced to fight for the Taliban. When Najmah and Nusrat meet at a refugee camp in Pakistan, they forge a friendship that reveals the heartbreak and hope of surviving the devastation of war." This is a touching story. It's really sad, but the good part is that Najmah and Nusrat eventually get on with their lives and try to focus on good things that happened instead of the bad thing. Captivating story.

"In the half hour they spent together on that still-rainy Saturday before each of them went their separate ways to work, Elaine discovered that (1) Faiz was Persian–he had grown up in Afghanistan; (2) he was a physician at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital; (3) love at first sight was not the ridiculous romantic notion she'd always thought it to be."
