This book takes a look at life on a ranch from the dog's point of view. The author's take on the dog's self-aggrandizing attitude makes the book funny through and through. My 7-year old doesn't really get the humor, but he likes the dog story. My 10-year old understands more of the subtleties and of course I laughed all the way through. It's a little rough for younger kids - good to read with an adult who can talk through things and point out when maybe our protagonists aren't doing what's right and ask what they should have done instead. There is also a lot of name-calling, which certain children will pick up, so choose wisely which of your children you allow to read it ! I'm going to read more of the books myself, though!

Hank's first person voice is adorable. He's a 'hard working' cow dog with an inflated sense of purpose, but with the best of intentions. There is a bit of mild name calling, but also extensive Latin. So all in all, it evens out! I would read it to my children, someday.
