A fun movie if you hold your mouth right and think of it, not as a serious disaster movie, but as though Airplane or Godzilla was the genre.

This is a 1954 American "disaster" film directed by William A. Wellman, based on the novel of the same name.
The film follows the passengers and crew on an airline flight from Hawaii to California that develops engine problems at its mid-way point.
While the captain expects a ditching, the first officer played by John Wayne convinces him to try to make the airport.
The crew eventually nurses the damaged airliner to a safe landing where an inspection reveals that it landed with virtually dry tanks.
As the captain, the first officer and other crew members struggle with the engine trouble, each passenger reveals his or her own problem.
Although the film gives you a bit of tingling excitement, each passenger's story seems bloated and overlong with an artificial, needlessly drawn-out speech.

An over-the-top precursor to the aviation disaster movies of the 1970's and the satirical Airplane series, where virtually every human onboard a malfunction-prone airliner has some major problem: a plot formula which became a standard for disaster movies. The acting is so exaggerated and dated, the special effects so hopelessly primitive that this intended nail-biter is quite comical. Commonly billed as yet another Wayne flick, Robert Stack occasionally dominates with an unintentionally hilarious performance as an overwrought pilot not up to the task. Ultimately, the real stars are the various passengers: their hokey and bizarre behavior provides ample hilarity and opportunities for incredulous observations.
