VERY GOOD 1951 color version of the famous play, stage show, and earlier 1936 film (which I have also seen). I recommend seeing both.
All the leading players were quite good, and I also enjoyed seeing Agnes Moorehead again as Parthenia - another slightly negative character casting (she got a lot of those). This was my introduction to dancers Marge and Gower Champion and I will be checking out more of their material (especially beautiful leggy Marge).

Show Boat is a spectacle with the River Boat Cotton Blossom as its stage of production. The all star cast is highlighted by one of the finest voices to sing on screen. That would be William Warfield as Joe singing his famous Old Man River. Marge and Gower Champion add visually stunning dance routines. There is a love affair to marry Howard Keel. They couldn't have picked more beautiful women of the time then Kathyrn Grayrson and Ava Gardner. Joe E. Brown as Captain Andy is a perfect choice. Once you get on board Cotton Blossom your in for a good time.

Stupid comment. The reception was standard for the times. This is an American masterpiece, with all its ugliness and bigotry on display. Enjoy it for the glorious music and smattering of racial injustice. LOVE IT.
