The third in the internationally bestselling series featuring the irresistible Sicilian detective In the third book in Andrea Camilleri's Inspector Montalbano series, the urbane and perceptive Sicilian detective exposes a viper's nest of government corruption and international intrigue in a compelling new case. When an elderly man is stabbed to death in an elevator and a crewman on an Italian fishing trawler is machine-gunned by a Tunisian patrol boat off Sicily's coast, only Montalbano suspects the link between the two incidents. His investigation leads to the beautiful Karima, an impoverished housecleaner and sometime prostitute, whose young son steals other schoolchildren's midmorning snacks. But Karima disappears, and the young snack thief's life--as well as Montalbano's--is on the line . . .

Hilarious! A grim scenario of betrayal, murder and corruption balanced by compassion, love, humanity, humour and a deviousness displayed by too few of the underdogs caught up in plots not of their own making and a system of corruption far too entrenched and powerful for them to change - but if one is cleaver one might hope to twist the tail of the beast and survive.

I enjoy spending time in Italy with Montalbano. Stephen Sartarelli; the translator, always includes an index for those of us who know little Italian. Slice of life stories and lots of interesting food are always featured.
