Terminally depressing story, some decent acting, and the most original insertion of songs into the stream of any musical you have ever seen. All these songs are from the depression era (or near to it), such as those the character would be selling. But having the characters break out into song in the middle of a cafe or street is done humorously and well. Despite having about 8 songs per episode (through the 6-part, 9 hour series), each one is slightly different. Sometimes the bystanders ignore it, sometimes they join in in a Busby Berkeley number. (Towards the end, a few come close to shark jumping, but most are great.)
