A heartbreaking indictment of India's class divide. Ramchand is a lowly sari wala in a shop catering to Amritsar's most exclusive clientele: bored, self-indulgent, and often viciously competitive wives and daughters of the elite. A series of chance encounters throw him into contact with two very different women at opposite ends of the social hierarchy; his futile attempts to rescue one and communicate with the other force Ramchand to confront the maddening injustice and cruelty of his situation and the impossibility of change.
