Hud Bannon has always preferred drinking, fighting and womanizing to the very traditional ways of his father. Hud is a man who cares more for himself than he does his young nephew, his dad, or even their understanding housekeeper. When disease threatens the cattle on the Bannon Ranch, the conflict between Hud and his old-line father reaches an all time high.

One of the best movies ever made. Period. End of story. Everything about it is brilliant.

Good movie. While I am watching I keep thinking yes he(hud) has some issues yet he seems to be the most realistic and honest of the characters of this film. To me it is a film that deals with change and it does it well.

Paul Newman plays Hud, the dark sheep of the Bannon family whose careless and egotistical ways constantly alienate him from friends and family alike (and turn him into an anti-hero for a generation of rebellious boomers in the process). Grand B&W cinematography highlights all those dusty Texan landscapes while a pair of Oscar winning performances from Melvyn Douglas as Hud's glowering patriarch and Patricia Neal as the lonely housekeeper keep the rest of the cast grounded. An American classic.

"Hud" is simply great acting by all the cast, which includes Paul Newman, Patricia Neal, and Melvin Douglas. A good case could be made that this is the best work of all three of them. The story of a small farm town and a cattle rancher and his family are real down to earth. You feel their boredom and you feel their joys. This is a classic movie that I have watched many times. It seems to get better with each new viewing. That is just what you expect with a classic drama like "Hud".
