"Varda's most recent effort-- the first filmed with a digital videocamera-- focuses on gleaners, those who gather the spoils left after a harvest, as well as those who mine the trash. Some completely exist on the leavings; others turn them into art, exercise their ethics, or simply have fun. The director likens gleaning to her own profession-that of collecting images, stories, fragments of sound, light, and color."

This is a PERFECT movie for & about trash fanatics--True TrashHeads. Varda tracks gleaners through the ages, from their representation in portraiture to those who troll the ends of farmers markets looking for delicious scraps. If you can't resist looking through what folks leave on the curb, this documentary might--in fact--send you over the edge. Learn about contemporary gleaning laws in France from a minister crouched in a bed of cabbages, all of which are free for the gleaning. Agnes Varda has the attention span of a child who would have been punished in school & we are all along for the ride. One thousand stars!!!

Watch this! a "green" film about global food waste: perfectly misshaped potatoes left in the field (now the ugly food movement), edibles in high-end Parisian restaurants' trash bins, fruit left after harvest (in French, grapiller means gleaning for above-ground goodies, while glaner for what's in/on the soil). Film also extends to the gleaning for info, Art, and so much more.
Varda's latest Visages Villages (Faces Places} also a charmer.
