"From Socrates to Charles I, Danton to Lincoln-here are [historical figures with speeches associated with them]. Fighting for justice, for freedom of speech, and sometimes even for their own lives, these orators demonstrate the ... resources of language in the service of the ... issues of their day."--Container.

These speeches are taken from various periods of history and are not delivered by the authors; thus, the language chosen by such authors as Socrates, Martin Luther, Thomas More, Queen Elizabeth I, King Charles I, Patrick Henry, Samuel Adams, William Pitt the Younger, Charles James Fox,
Emile Zola, Emmeline Pankhurst and Abraham Lincoln is emphasized. Many were given in the context of war or other life and death situations, including the imminent execution of some of the authors. The clarity and courage of these speeches was striking. It was very moving to hear how mightily the pen has opposed the sword on such issues as religious freedom, innate human equality, the wrongs of slavery, the right to self-determination of nations, such as the U.S. and Ireland, freedom of speech, the horrors of war, and women's right to vote.
