Not since LORD OF THE RINGS has there been an epic of such breathless excitement - for readers of all ages. Lyra Belacqua just may hold the future of the universe in her hands. It all begins when her uncle, Lord Asriel, returns to England with tales of mystery and danger - and the discovery of a place where the veil between the worlds is thin near the North Pole. Soon Lyra is drawn into the struggle of her life against evil scientists, mercenaries, and a magic truth-telling machine. And the fate of the entire cosmos depends on her. THE GOLDEN COMPASS is a work of stunning originality, a masterpiece of fantasy and storytelling.

"Beautifully written, shocking, moving, intellectually funny . . . a great story." (The London Times)

This was a fun novel, if a bit dark for kids, and worked really well as an audiobook - it's pretty much a full-cast for the audiobook (or what seemed to be). I'll be continuing the series, but not rushing to the next.

I loved the audiodrama! The cast was amazing, and the story--though, Lyra was a little bit too clever at times (I wish she'd have struggled a bit more to piece things together)--was exciting and engaging!

Pullman's world building is undoubtedly original and imaginative, but the characters in this story are so uninteresting that not once did I care about any of them. Actually, that's not completely true. The boy who was severed from his daemon and eventually died--I forget his name--that one broke my heart. The story did pick up a little towards the end even though it was a slog getting there. I may continue on with the series some day, but for now I'm giving it a rest.

I loved this book and this whole entire series. It's just so different, it's a brand new world and I just couldn't get enough of it!

Great audio book narrated by the author. Loved that each of the characters had their own unique voice. It kept me engaged from start to end. If you like audiobooks you'll like this one.

The book that started all the controversy. A great read!
