Michel Serrault, actor in some 100 films, plays Monsieur Arnaud, a somewhat elderly ex-judge and ex-business man who hires the beautiful and young Nelly (Emmanuelle Beart) to help him word process his autobiography. The relationship is platonic, but is it really? Probably, but maybe Arnaud wishes he were 30 or 40 years younger. Or maybe he just likes Nelly as a sorta daughter. For me it doesn’t really matter. I noted that Serrault is a great actor, with many expressions with his face and his voice. I did not realize that he was the actor in Diabolique (1955) and Le Cage Aux Folles (1979) two of the greatest French films ever, films that I last saw in the 1970’s. I was truly sad to have to say goodbye to these characters as they realized at the end that their relationship was deeper than they both realized.
