I understand why telling this story is important to Mr. Bruchac. He wants to show the Abenaki side of Rogers' Rangers' attack on the Village of St. Francis. I did learn a lot about Abenaki history and culture, which is why I am giving this book one star. However, I feel that this book is inappropriate for the age group at which it is aimed. The story is by turns dull (too many "info dump" sections) and gory (see "notices").

I have to disagree with the Library review which says this is for grades 5-9. My 10 yo found it very disturbing when the massacre was described at great length and at times in graphic detail (for a 10 yo). For example, how one man was shot 4 times in the back, one of which severed his spinal cord, and the people trying to help him watched him slowly die and gasp to try and answer questions. Most of the book is fine, but I think some scenes are more appropriate for teens. If you were reading it aloud to the child(ren), you could skip over those parts.
