Another story of the poor underlings having their day against the powerful overlords, made more interesting for us because it's the *English speakers* who are the bad guys. But that's not all this movie tries to be, and it succeeds on all fronts: across-the-lines forbidden love, sports story, unification story, historical drama, social commentary -- plus of course being a musical, because hey! it's Bollywood.

Some will warn you about the long running time ... as if this were at all significant. It would be, if the story were dull. But LAGAAN not only holds your interest, it picks up steam. When the cricket match finally begins, you've already spent as much or more time than many other epics -- and yet it just gets better. At nearly four hours, it had better!

For those who do not have a four-hour stretch in one sitting, this film can be split over two nights -- either at the intermission or (my preference) by pausing when the cricket game begins (about 2.5 hours), because that's a whole film in itself. Either way, you won't be sorry, because LAGAAN is one of the most satisfying films you'll see, in any language.

personal rating: 9/10

Excellent movie, music, acting and production numbers. Not a true story, I'm guessing since the hero's name "has disappeared from history". Some resentment of the British colonial rule, which is understandable since imperialists are never loved.

I know nothing about cricket, but I enjoyed this entertaining musical movie very much. Thanks to the attractiveness of the leading star, this movie is far more appealing, lively, fun, and energetic than David Lean's somewhat snobbish "Passage to India".

Really enjoyed this film, but the hold line moved really slowly at the library. I saw it on netflix streaming.

We love this family movie, and are so dissappointed that it has not been returned to circulation!

At 3.5 hrs this is one long film. A bit too much drama for me but if you are a cricket fan and enjoy Indian song and dance you will have a good time.

This movie is fun and inspiring! A good read even for somebody not into the Indian movie scene. It's a little long though. The dancing was fun!

This was the first Bollywood movie I ever saw, and I was hooked. A little confusing if you don't understand cricket, but not to the point where you couldn't still enjoy it.

This is your classic story of the underdogs taking on the established system, but this time it is about the life and death of the people of India and having the money to pay taxes and enough food to live. A Cricket competition brings together a village and as well as a sympathetic Englishwoman to teach them the game. It turns into a love triangle between the English Woman, our hero and the village girl who has always loved him.
