Somewhere in South America, at the home of the country's vice president, a lavish birthday party is being held in honor of a powerful Japanese businessman. A famous American opera diva entertains the international guests. It is a night out of a fairytale--until a band of gun-wielding terrorists breaks in through the air-conditioning vents and takes the entire party hostage.
But what begins as a panicked, life-threatening scenario turns into something quite different, as terrorists and hostages forge unexpected bonds, people from different countries and continents become compatriots, and passionate, ill-fated love blooms upon this unlikely soil.

Add a CommentI think this is one of the best audiobooks I've ever listened to! It starts off a bit slow but stick with it, things really intensify and before long, you'll be completely gripped! I'd explain further, but I don't want to spoil it--I'll just say this is both suspenseful and romantic, and is very well written--you can almost hear the music!
I was left speechless by this book - a Stockholm Syndrome situation where the captors and captives live side-by-side in harmony as the relationships between them deepen and complicate. The book has no sole main character, but Gen, the translator, is intimately entwined in the plot since he is the only person that can bridge the many language barriers between the terrorists and the hostages. The ending is not picture perfect by any means, but it is a wild ride and one that I greatly enjoyed.
Fascinating story about language, love and how we react to an unusual situation. I found myself waiting, as the hostages did, for the story to have a crescendo of action, that is,after all, the formula we have become accustom to in movies and television. This story will feel different and that is good, being held hostage feels different and the pace of this story gets you close to that experience. This story was inspired by true events which occurred in the Japanese embassy in 1996. Well worth a listen.
