Hitler is perhaps the most notorious of 20th century dictators, shorthand for absolute evil and tyranny. Yet once you strip away the evil, what do we know about him? Historian Ian Kershaw's sweeping and brilliantly researched two volume biography attempts to make sense of the man, as well as seeking to understand the historical and cultural context that made him possible. Volume one, Hubris, traces his inauspicious early days (he was a lazy, starving artist) to his rise to power in the 30s. Volume two, Nemesis, picks up there and then takes us through the war and Hitler and Nazi Germany's downfall. An indispensable book.
