Great coverage of how these big business deals go down. Happened long ago, but funny how current it all seems. Skip the movie - the book is 10 times better.
I am sure you are rolling your eyes at a five star rating for a book on a leveraged buyout, but this book is porn for the Investment Banking/M&A crowd. If you want to get a great look at one of the largest most publicized LBOs of the 20th century than this is your window. I feel it is especially important to read this book if you feel that you want to enter the industry. It covers all of the participants in the RJR Nabisco buyout. From beginning to end it is informative and rather entertaining. It explains the different financing vehicles being used to purchase the company, why the deal was so lucrative and why it was viable for some and not others. There are many forces at work when deals like this go down and the book gives a pretty complete picture as to what happened and why. Everyone on Wall Street seemed to want their piece of this deal including KKR, Shearson Lehman, Skadden Arps, Forstmann and many more. If Investment Banking courses through your veins and you want to learn about the “art of the deal” then this is your book.
This is one of the best books I've ever read - literally could not put it down. It reads like a thriller novel. All the characters seem to jump off the pages. If you have any interest in Wall Street scheming and shenanigans, or finance and investing in general, this book is a must read.
