Fukuyama considers whether or not there is a direction to the history of mankind. He identifies two powerful forces guiding our actions: the logic of desire (the rational economic process); and the desire for recognition, which he describes as the very motor of history.

The world of political science before the Berlin Wall fell was simpler and not multi-polar. Even the North South alignments were towards Marxism. Fukuyama describes all this, as well as the central role of religion and reason in philosophy, so clearly that his book should be considered one of the top 10 books of the past 50 years.

The seminal work by someone often considered a founder of 'neoconservativism' who later broke with the title and some of the tenets of that philosophy. A wide ranging intellectual history building from Hegel to Marx and on through time. Near the end of the book its easy to find places where it seems Fukuyama is doing the exact things he's spent the first half criticizing but its still a more than worthwhile read. I had heard about Fukuyama's most important points before reading the book but the full reporting is really amazing in its breadth and will definitely change how you think about really grand questions about the state, society our relations to them and the 'progression' of each.
