This book is so good it will take your breath away. Whether you already are familiar with the immediate aftermath of the Korean War as experienced by the women and children living Korea at the time, or whether this is an entirely new story for you, you will be forever touched by this book. I read it about 20 years ago, and it still comes back to me; every time North Korea is in the news I am reminded of the courage and strength of the grandmother, mother, and daughter. If you don't understand what the Japanese and then the Russians did to the people of Korea, you can't possibly comprehend their circumstances now.
