It is difficult to know what to say about The New Year. Upon its release in 1968 it probably felt very modern, but today it feels embarrassingly old fashioned. So many things in this book bothered me. And yet...I still felt compelled to read through to the end. Something in the novel drew me in, though I cannot say what.
If The New Year raises a reader's consciousness about discrimination against Amerasians (a problem both in 1968 and in the present day), then I hope that reader will also seek out more modern texts that address this same issue.
