Uncomfortable with the fit of her life, now that she's in the middle of it, Nan gets into her car and just goes--driving across the country on back roads, following the moon; and stopping to talk to people. Through conversations with women, men, with her husband through letters, and with herself through her diary, Nan confronts topics long overdue for her attention. She writes to her husband and says things she's never admitted before; and she discovers how the fabric of her life can be reshaped into a more authentic creation.

Add a CommentLOVED this book. I read it in one sitting....I just couldn't break the continuity of the story. ...or should I say... I didn't want to break it. A "Must Read" for women who have come to that age of leaving the past of we consider "being young" and moving on to the future. I laughed and cried right along with Nan, the woman in the story. I went straight to the computer and ordered 3 books, one for each of my close girlfriends and one to keep on my shelf.
An exploration of one's life in a touching way. Nan turns 50, leaves her husband a note saying that she is leaving to contemplate her life, and that she loves him and will be back. We take the trip with her and through journal entries and letters home to her husband, we examine her past, present and future.
Recommended to me by a library patron, this novel by an American author who has gained a loyal following in the past couple of years was extremely engaging and enjoyable. Written as journal entries and letters home to her husband, a woman recently turned fifty examines her marriage and renews her interest in life while escaping on a kind of Thelma and Louise road trip.
Wonderful story. Lots to identify with. Kept my interest and made me want to curl up and keep reading until the end!
Loved this book! Although the main character Nan was a bit quirky sometimes, I found her easy to relate to, albeit a few times her actions seemed far fetched, yet, for the most part, the simple truths of marriage came through. Found this to be another light and easy read that had me wanting to know what was next. Hard to put this one down once I started it. Loved the letters and journal entries. What a great way to put the reader right into the story! Found myself wondering what Martin thought every time he received Nan's letters. Thanks for another good read!

Elizabeth Berg does a fabulous job of creating believeable characters involved in real life dilemas. This is very difficult to find, truth in everyday situations, people willing to expose the painful parts of our reality.
I'm not speaking of this book in particular but almost all of her books.
