I had hoped this would fall into the 'guilty pleasures' category, but was quickly disappointed. Repetitive dialogue, with too much gratuitous violence. And for an author with such a reputation for realistic detail, McMurtry demonstrates a strange unfamiliarity with firearms (e.g. the decade when repeating rifles were introduced in the West). Bottom line: couldn't finish it.

I have not read "Lonesome Dove" yet. I've read the first two prequels and am not impressed. I was expecting a lot more. I think it' s because I really don't like any of the characters!

An amazing, meticulously written tale. Easily as good as "Lonesome Dove." I couldn't put it down.
