It started out slow but got very interesting. Loved the ending, yes it was sad, but what happens to the bookshop at the end is fitting! It is a story, not an action packed movie, so it is not everyone's cup of tea. I liked it. I would recommend it if you like watching PBS British programs.

Really boring and a big disappointment. Could not get into it at all.

I really like Bill so anything he is in I enjoy.

I liked this film, but not as much as I hoped for. It had so much going for it! Emily Mortimer was lovely as a widow trying to start a new life in a small coastal town in Britain in 1959. She opens up a small bookshop, but runs into resistance from the snobbish town matriarch, Patricia Clarkson. I loved the setting, the time period, the performances and the basic plot. But I must admit, the film was slow. Very slow. And a lot of it was kind of haunting and sad, not fun and charming. So I liked it, but didn't love it.

I tried, but not get into this overly provincial story. I'm sure women might enjoy it.

The atmosphere of the movie reminded me of a Jane Austen book. Not for people who like car crashes and police chases, but it is a study of the self absorption and small town politics that exist with many people.

So much whispered talking that not much could be understood. It also was disconnected and had no character buildup. The landscape was pleasant showing how nice life would be living there - without the people in this movie. It was boring with no expectations fulfilled.

The premise was lovely, but this ended up being a too-quiet British drama with very few likable characters and quite a few uninteresting nasty ones.

I liked Emily Mortimer a lot in Disney's 'The Kid'. Haven't seen her in much since, though. This movie seemed ok, but nothing special, up until the end when the plot just seemed to veer left suddenly in a way that made little sense and just left you confused. Really bad story writing at the end. This woman was of such weak character it turned out. Disappointing. I would have expected something better.

A good British film. Quiet.

It’s a people movie. If you think the last Avengers movie was “good”, this is not for you. If you like BBC programs, this is a good one for your movie list.

Slow movie with mediocre dialog. It’s probably not really a “bad” movie but it is sooo so ordinary. And everything is sooo predictable and overly foreshadowed. I almost quit 15 minutes into the movie but forced myself to watch the entire thing because I generally like the main actors. Bill Nighy was pretty good, Emily Mortimer was ok, but Patricia Clarkson had nothing to work with; her character was basically a one note caricature.

My wife and I enjoyed this movie. It's a good storyline and well-cast. Bill Nighy in particular does a good job as a foil to the evil matron who "knows what's right for the village and everyone in it". That reminds me, I have a serious problem with the review of this movie by cbx4evr where that individual kept the movie longer than needed as a "favor" to those who were waiting for it. That kind of attitude is consummately arrogant and reeks of "I know what's good for you, and you do not." Please let me remind that reviewer that a significant number of people rated this movie highly.

Wanted so much to like this movie, but it was boring and the characters lacked any depth. The villain is one-dimensional as are all of the rest of the characters. A very rose-colored view of country life. This film manages to make the novel Lolita itself seem boring. A romanticized view of owning and managing a bookshop. The whole film felt like a Hallmark movie of the week.

It was an interesting story that showed at the end how the impact of an individual can change the course of another individual's life.

Come for the beautiful views of the countryside and water ... stay for the emotional, passionate performances from Emily Mortimer and Bill Nighy.

Enjoyed this heartwarming, unusual story about a small bookshop in a tiny town with its' unexpected ending. Both Emily Mortimer and Bill Nighy were good in the movie.

What a slow, depressing story! The whole movie you're waiting for things to turn around for the triumphant ending and... well, there is no happy ending.

My goodness, I don’t think it would be possible to make a more boring movie than this. It’s like stick a fork in your eye boring. Too many holes in the story. It was probably a good book but the movie is a complete waste of time. I’ve got it on a three week loan. As a favour to the 50+ people who are waiting for it I’ll hang on to it for the three weeks. This will give you a chance to change your mind and find something else to watch. You can thank me later.

Well acted. I remember a woman's place in 1960.

Well acted period drama. A nice way to spend an evening, hot buttery popcorn and a bottle of Chardonnay and a good friend or 2.
