Georgie is such a badass. Her actions and thought process show us a tough and adventurous protagonist who is an absolute icon. However, I didn’t love any of the other characters. Billy was an absolute ass and is responsible for everything…

Another good children’s historical fiction that fits into the western kick I’ve been on. Mystery and adventure combined with a feisty 13 yr old main character made this an entertaining read.

Think 'True Grit' for the middle grade set. I loved the main character's determination! I'd classify this chapter book as a thriller, mystery, and western. Hand it to those kids who want murder mysteries but aren't quite ready for young…

Georgie is known for two things: she’s a sharp shooter with a sharp tongue. She is also intelligent, brave, caring, and passionate about her family and the store they run. When her sister, Agatha, runs away and a mutilated body wearing…

Not sure how to give this 5 stars, but I would. This is jam-packed with action and grit, and heart. A fantastic historical novel set in Wisconsin in 1871. I thought it got a tiny bit preachy at the very end, but I still rank it as…

NYPL Staff Pick Georgie’s sister Agatha is dead. That’s what everyone thinks anyway. Except Georgie. But when she heads out into the 1871 wilderness of Wisconsin with her trusty gun, the truth may turn out to be a whole lot more…

I loved Timberlake's 'That Girl Lucy Moon' (which I believe is out of print...too bad). This one didn't grab me as strongly. The conclusion and tying-up-of-ends were really long and drawn out.

One day, the sheriff of Placid, Wisconsin returns to town with the body of a young girl. The body is too mangled to truly identify, but she has auburn hair and is wearing a green dress that was last seen on Agatha Burkhardt -- a girl who…

Beautifully written and constructed western with a strong female lead; True Grit for the Upper Elementary and Middle School set. I loved it - stayed up late at night reading by the closet light when the big showdown happens. Don't miss…

I like children’s books that sock you in the gut. Not the books that telegraph their hits or do the old one-two punch you can see coming from a mile away. No way, man, I’m talking about the books where you're reading along, merrily as…
