PEOPLE DON’T really know they’re waiting for war before war begins, but there is often an unease that is not present at times of peace and few films have been more effective at evoking this psychic twilight than the 1953 Oscar-winner.…

Never seen this before. It won 8 Oscar® awards, then the next year “On the Waterfront” did the same.
Great performances aren’t able to overcome a story that wanders a bit. All of it leading up to Pearl Harbour which then results in…

2-1/2 just in case my era filter is faulty, but I don't understand the awards and reverence for this film. I assume 1953 was well into noir, so this competitor must have chosen romance over reality.
The relationships were extremely…

An old movie about the raw and brutal military life before the Pearl Harbor attack. The film was performed by many big stars and had won 8 Academy Awards. Although it is in black and white but still a good watch.

A VERY GOOD film about the love, intrique and adventures of Navy- civilian personnel in love and war before and during the Pearl Harbor attack in Hawaii. Big stars.

If I had rated this back in the day, I would have given it 5 stars. But compared to modern movie technology, it lacked so much detail. Still, it was a good watch. The characters were interesting and the story line was good.

IF I’M CHANGING channels and run across "From Here to Eternity," I stop and watch it to the end. And when you get to the end, pay attention to the telling scene of the two women aboard ship, lying to one another about their men.

The copy I got wouldn't play. Later got a different copy that did play. This was best picture for I think, 1953 (?). It was interesting as a movie of it's time...to me it came across as dated. In this movie the men are men and the women…

VERY GOOD 1953 film with several fine actors and actresses set in Army base in Hawaii prior to Japanese 1941 attack starting WWII. It does provide an interesting peak into period army life (rather different than when I got drafted into…

Someone once said to me "if you wanna know how the demise of the American family happened, look to Hollywood & the sexual revolution." Years ago I thought that was a foolish statement by some unenlightened prude. But as I watch more old…

Nominated for 13 Oscars, winner of 7. This is a film set in Hawaii, mostly in peace time before the attack on Pearl Harbor. It is the story of individuals connected to the army base, individuals not fully satisfied with their lives. This…

Although the original earthiness and cynical army-bashing of Jones’ book was toned down considerably by the censors, Zinneman’s film still manages to cast a few stones at the military mindset while a handful of carefully edited embraces,…

It's not really a war movie, as Pearl Harbor isn't attacked until the end of the movie and the rest of the film is character-driven. Somehow they filmmakers took James Jones's massive, bruising 800 page novel and made it into a rousing,…
