A powerful, blazingly honest, inspiring memoir: the story of a 1,100 mile solo hike that broke down a young woman reeling from catastrophe--and built her back up again.

It had only to do with how it felt to be in the wild. With what it was like to walk for miles for no reason other than to witness the accumulation of trees and meadows, mountains and deserts, streams and rocks, rivers and grasses, sunrises and sunsets. The experience was powerful and fundamental.
I felt fierce and humble and gathered up inside, like I was safe in this world.

Add a CommentI you want to be enticed and delightfully dragged paragraph by paragraph, page by page, though the unknown, both internal and external, then READ THIS BOOK. Not really a book about hiking, but about the adventure of walking 1,000 plus miles of the Pacific Crest Trail and how that experience cleanses the soul, reframes experiences, and brings life to a new perspective. Once I started I couldn't put it down, but now it's time to get back to the humdrum of laundry, etc.

Great book! Makes me want to go hiking!
I was doubtful at first that a whole book about a woman walking in the woods by herself would be a worthwhile read, but she drew me in. Her flaws were familiar to me (and would be to most readers) and her process of working through them was insightful. I almost felt like i had done the trail with her.
Fascinating story about somebody some what self centered who uses self inflicted physical hardship to overcome emotional hardship
An interesting biography.
Great for anyone interested in hiking, wellness, self-esteem and overcoming addictions and grief. I loved this book, although the beginning was very sad. It bluntly describes the death of the author's mother from cancer and the grief that Strayed can't shake. However, the happy ending makes up for it, and makes the reader believe that we can accomplish anything if we set our minds to it.
Has 100 holds on it. Read this one quickly!
Had a hard time putting this book down. A courageously honest memoir about a remarkably gutsy adventure. Great writer.
A good read. Strayed's writing style is very enjoyable and easy to read. The fact that it is a true story made it even more engaging. My only worry is that I'll find out that it has been overly embellished... like Oprah's previous fav "A Million Little Pieces". I hope "O" did her fact checking before endorsing this one :)
