Another excellent female Nigerian writer whom I've discovered this year. The title attracted me first. Then, I was drawn in by the simple writing style, the complicated relationship between the sisters and they way their family history affected the current events.
Two reasons, I withheld a five-star rating is that despite Ayoola's beauty, I think she gets off way too many times - felt too convenient too many times. The other is the ending. I won't say anything to spoil it; it was anticlimactic and disappointing.Another excellent female Nigerian writer whom I've discovered this year. The title attracted me first. Thanks to the Peak Picks program, I was able to read this book much sooner than the long line ahead of my regular request would have allowed. It doesn't stop there. SPL hosted deWitt reading from this book at the Downtown library. Thank you SPL!
Now, on to my review. This is my fourth of deWitt's books - my favorite still being The Sisters Brothers. French Exit still possessed deWitt's tight writing style, attention to details and witty dialogue. My issue with the novel is that I didn't like the main characters and they didn't grow on me. There was a distance that I couldn't close. I enjoyed and admired the writing, the humor and the stories within the larger plot and that kept me going when Frances and Malcolm didn't.
deWitt said during his reading that these two characters (Bernie Madoff types) had been swirling in his mind for a long time. He said he also wanted to write a story about a mother-son relationship.
I like Patrick deWitt. I didn't love French Exit but I will read his next book (and likely the one after that). I say you read it too but read The Sisters Brothers first and see what you think. Thanks to the Peak Picks program, I was able to read this book much sooner than the long line ahead of my regular request would have allowed. What a great read. The dual-point-of-view perspective (mother and daughter) really worked. I'm not the targeted YA audience, yet I enjoyed and could relate to the plot. The characters were three-dimensional. The situations get to the heart of what we want vs. what the people around us that care for and are wiser (or supposed to be) want for us. The author has a gift for writing dialogue. She has a good sense for the way people speak and she's funny! I was a little teary at the end. What a great read. Would you live your life differently if you were told at a young age the date of your death? Would believing that this date is accurate lead you to make good or bed decisions? This novel explores this and what these four siblings do with their lives after a fortune teller provides them their dates of death. It's a coming of age novel with the added twist of knowing this death date. I really enjoyed the first two stories Simon and Klara. For Daniel and Varya, it was a different kind of reading enjoyment but it's steadied out. I'm glad I read it but there was just a tad lacking at the story's conclusion, but the story has stayed with me and some questions remain. My questions would require a spoiler alert so I'll just say that I got a lot out of the story.Would you live your life differently if you were told at a young age the date of your death? The topics of the essays in this collection vary wildly. I like essays and figured it'd be a great way to delve in and discover new writers. Yes and no. It was grueling slogging my way through essays that didn't resonate with me and consequently, it took me much longer than usual to finish reading the book.
However, when I connected with an essay, it was a delight. There were several that have stayed with me, in particular David Foster Wallace's Consider the Lobster, Holly Welker's Satin Worship, Brian Doyle's Joyas Voladoras, and Kitty Burns Florey's Sister Bernadette's Barking Dog.

What an enjoyable read! This graphic novel took me on a four-day jaunt to Iceland - a place I want to visit. Lonnie Mann does a great job showing and telling. It's a quick read/view and I wish it'd been a longer book. Educational and fun!

If someone had told me the plot to The Afterlives, I'm certain I'd have said, No Thanks. I read a snippet touting the novel and the next day found an advanced reader copy in a neighborhood free library. I started reading and had a difficult time putting it down. The story is about the living, the dead, what happens during our time and what happens after. I liked the tone and voice of the narrator. The stories kept me interested and the ending all worked. I'm even having a hard time explaining why I liked it but I really really enjoyed it.If someone had told me the plot to The Afterlives, I'm certain I'd have said, No Thanks. LOVED IT.
This one was gripping from the start. The main character was trustworthy, considerate. I liked him at the helm. The secondary characters had legs too. I'm Not Scared about finding out dark truths about family and the darkness that humans are capable of. Combine the two and there's this coming-of-age story. It's a translated book and it was well done because it read seamlessly, as if it had been originally written in English.
It's not a long book so I read it fast and it was disappointing to have the experience come to an end. I searched for a sequel but there isn't one, which is probably for best. I did find that the book was made into a movie (2004) but the library doesn't have it. BOO. I will submit a request to SPL to order a copy.LOVED IT.

The music is excellent. The plot weak. The violence is gratuitous and over the top. Charlize Theron is gorgeous and kicks ass but the movie is a disappointment with a lame story and poor character development.

What I enjoyed about this book were the chapters where the author took a break from trying so hard to be over-the-top quirky and instead detailed difficult situations where her anxiety was debilitating and showed how she dealt with it. That angle was compelling. She's skillful at adding humor at the right time to show how she manages through her painful experiences.
The rest of the book, OY! Yes, she's funny, but she tries waaay too hard to prove it. Toward the end, it was tedium. I'm all for weird and different. I love Sedaris and appreciate Burroughs but I found Lawson to be too loquacious. What I enjoyed about this book were the chapters where the author took a break from trying so hard to be over-the-top quirky and instead detailed difficult situations where her anxiety was debilitating and showed how she dealt with it.
