it was amazing
Captivity sounds like an old concept, something that happened in a time so far away that it doesn't seem possible. To capture someone and take them away to a culture and place that is so foreign that everything is new and unknown. Olive's story is one of acceptance and a determination to survive in an environment that is so totally strange to her, she learns to adapt in ways that will imprint on her soul and face in ways that when she is re assimilated into American culture she never totally becomes what she was. The tattoo on her chin is a mark that separates her from her old life and tries to stain her character. But she rises above this and learns to live a life in white culture that neither denies her captivity or her captors.Jul 08, 2017

What an amazingly beautiful book! This has been on my to read list for years and I don't know why I waited this long. Every chapter is a little gem, full of beautiful descriptions of a time past that awakens the senses. Much like a time machine, you soon find yourself transported not just to 1928 but into a boy's life where discovery of simple joys is just a part of what lies ahead. I think this novel is like a bookend to Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird as they both perfectly capture a child's introduction to real life by expertly drawing the curtain back to reveal the real world. Neither flinches from the reality of growing up and finding yourself. What an amazingly beautiful book! This has been on my to read list for years and I don't know why I waited this long. Living in a building with a communal garden sounds idyllic to Claire after she and her daughters try to recover from a horrific incident involving their father. Dealing with this aftermath takes the second seat when one of the girls is attacked one summer evening. Soon things don't look so wonderful in this paradise and it is rife with suspects. Loved the action packed thriller suspense that is full of twists and turns. Lovers of the Girl on the Train will enjoy this much more clever novel.Living in a building with a communal garden sounds idyllic to Claire after she and her daughters try to recover from a horrific incident involving their father. When Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd is talked into transporting a child back to her family in post civil war Texas, he thinks he might have bitten off more than he can handle. His young charge is a kidnapped girl who has been kept by a tribe called the Kiowa and she can't remember any other family. This book is beautifully written in language that not only invokes the time period but paints word pictures that transported me to a place that is long gone but can be accessed through this authors imagination. When Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd is talked into transporting a child back to her family in post civil war Texas, he thinks he might have bitten off more than he can handle. Filled with historical detail, this book takes the reader inside the childhood and adult life of a very memorable but largely forgotten royal princess. Ruled with an iron fist by her mother, deserted by the early death of her father, Princess Louise grew up in a brood of siblings that were also emotionally abused by their mother and sometimes the servants, she never truly came into her own until well into her adult years. Then she became a wonderful advocate and patron to the arts as well as entering into what she could have been all along.Filled with historical detail, this book takes the reader inside the childhood and adult life of a very memorable but largely forgotten royal princess. Interesting story of a murder in the past that involves a young journalist and her grandmother. Lots of twists and turns with exceptional details of wartime intelligence, I loved the history depicted and the characters drew me into their lives. Wow! What a great read! Funny, intelligent storytelling recounts the "true" story of one strong woman who lived her life as she wanted and expected nothing less of the people around her. The other characters in this delight are wonderfully drawn and jump off the page. I laughed out loud at some of the dialogue which is always fun to do and put it down with regret. If you like a fascinating read based on a true story about a clever gal, then this one will not fail you.Wow! What a great read! Pretty good story of a family dealing with a secret that has destroyed their lives in a small farming community because of the actions of one of their own. I knew this was going to be a lovely warm spirited read when I opened the book to find old fashioned end papers that had pictures of bells! Two stories are told simultaneously, one set in the past, while the other is present day. Both sets of characters have their problems and disappointments but the Civil War story of Longfellow and his family shines the brightest. For fans of "The Gift" this book will surely please.I knew this was going to be a lovely warm spirited read when I opened the book to find old fashioned end papers that had pictures of bells! Don't bother. For a book that is set in New Orleans at the birth of jazz, it should have soared with lyricism instead of laying a big boring egg. Louis Armstrong would have been embarrassed to be a character in such a misguided endeavor.

What would happen if a four year old child was kidnapped and then found a year later? Would they remember their former life? Would they know their family? How would this affect the rest of your life? In August of 1912, Bobby Dunbar went missing from his families cabin and the search found nothing. No child, no body, no clothes, in fact, no other clues. As the months dragged on, his parents kept up hope that somehow he could be found. But in 1912-13, there were no coordinated procedures in place to deal with such a situation. When a child is spotted the authorities were unable to move fast enough to get to the child. Then when they finally put two and two together they pounced on an old tinker who had a child with him. But was this child the missing Bobby or another child? It wouldn't be until a hundred years later that DNA testing would finally answer the question. Written by a granddaughter of Bobby Dunbar, this nonfiction account reads like fiction, it is so unbelievable. What would happen if a four year old child was kidnapped and then found a year later? Imagine you are in a cozy chair in a warm place on a crummy cold evening, when an older gentleman tells you he has written an account of a strange phenomenon that has haunted him his whole life. This intrigues you enough to accept the written account and spend the whole night reading a story of a ghost that may or may not be a part of one of the most subtle creeping tales that were ever recorded. This is the tale that Susan Hill has so expertly created. I was intrigued from the start and by the end amazed at what she had revealed. This amazing book completely captures the true life events that led to the murder of a family of four in what we think of as a gentler time. The language subtly wound itself like a cashmere white scarf with a comforting Christmas scene in a sweet but grief stricken family in the first part of the book. Then just as swiftly as their murders happen, the next part of the story is brought forward with well drawn characters some fictional and some from true life. The hunt for truth and justice is a hard road to travel but in the end the grace and kind intelligence of the people who have longed for completion is told with such compassion that I could not but find the ending completely satisfying. For readers who enjoyed All the Light You Cannot See, this book may interest you. This amazing book completely captures the true life events that led to the murder of a family of four in what we think of as a gentler time.
