I really enjoyed this book. It was fun and fascinating to be immersed in the world of Victorian colonial Australia. This is a mystery story but the questions ultimately remain unanswered. Despite the lack of any resolution, it was still satisfying in a weird way. The reader gets swept up in the sensationalism of the mystery just like the townspeople, but the ripple effect caused by the girls' disappearance eventually takes over and we are forced to move on from seeking answers.
I would describe PaHR as enigmatic and atmospheric. I think comparisons to The Virgin Suicides are pretty apt: the girls are idealized and made almost ethereal in people's minds, and the truth about their lives and deaths become secondary to their romanticized tragedy.
Apparently there is a "deleted scene" that was left out of the final version of the book which explains what happened. Personally I'm glad it was omitted because I loved the ambiguity. So much is hinted at and left to exist just under the surface, which is part of what makes Picnic at Hanging Rock so intriguing and haunting.I really enjoyed this book. Yes, yes, YES!!! to this album! I am kind of freaking out about how good it is! The timeless songs and spirit of Woody Guthrie live on, and even modern 'kids' who have no idea who he was can get into this album. Those of us who already know and love Guthrie feel like we connect with him all over again. I want to give Billy Bragg and WIlco a trophy for having the guts to tackle Woody's songs because the result is so phenomenal!

I really enjoyed hearing some of the raw, acoustic takes of his songs before they had been "perfected" in the studio. George Harrison is such an expressive, brilliant songwriter and it feels so intimate to hear these demos and early takes of my favorite songs coming to life.I really enjoyed hearing some of the raw, acoustic takes of his songs before they had been "perfected" in the studio. I love Medeski, Martin, and Wood... they never fail to make intellegent, interesting, good-time party music. However this album was more techno-electronica than their usual funky-jazz feel. Still good but not what I was expecting, and I definitely prefer the other albums I've heard, like "Friday Afternoon in the Universe."I love Medeski, Martin, and Wood... they never fail to make intellegent, interesting, good-time party music. An interesting read. Like many of us, the author relates deeply to Chris McCandless and his urge to live in the wild, which led him to write this book. He does a good job of addressing both 'sides': those who romanticize McCandless's fateful adventure and those who think he was a punk kid with a death wish and no respect for the Alaskan wild. Krakauer also briefly visits the stories of other men who have gone on similar adventures, some who survived. It is easy to say that hubris and ignorance are what led to McCandless's death, but he also may have been one of those people who's ideas were just too big for the 'normal' world. His story is both inspiring and uninspiring at the same time.An interesting read. Skip this one if you are looking for a revolutionary new diet... this is just the same old low-carb Paleo garbage. It doesn't work if you are any kind of vegetarian, which in my mind it seems like a plant-based diet is way healthier in the long run than stuffing your gullet with greasy meat 3 meals a day. The workout section didn't inspire me either, except that I had never thought about using kettlebells before.
And is it just me, or does the section on sex and the female orgasm seem random and out of place, and even a little bit creepy?Skip this one if you are looking for a revolutionary new diet... this is just the same old low-carb Paleo garbage. Psychedelic, pop-rock goodness. This album blew my mind the first time I heard it and it never loses its magic. Sounds amazing under the influence of pretty much anything but if you aren't into that sort of thing, don't worry-- it's just as good sober.Psychedelic, pop-rock goodness. I was totally engrossed in the Earth's Children books and was excited to finish this, the last book in the series, but I was sadly disappointed. I thought 'Clan of the Cave Bear' was great, 'The Valley of Horses' was maybe even a little better, and 'The Mammoth Hunters' was really good. The last three books ('The Plains of Passage,' 'The Shelters of Stone' and 'The Land of Painted Caves') got progressively worse in plot and writing style to the point where I couldn't even finish the last book. Believe me, it pains me to a nerdy level to not finish a series when I have made it so far... I just got so bored that I found myself actually dreading reading the book.
Auel seems to get lazier with each book, constantly summarizing and recapping the events from the earlier books and bogging down the reader with tedious pages of over-descriptions. Of course I'm all for vivid imagery, but all the detailed descriptions become the same after awhile, especially the love scenes. I know Jondalar and Ayla are hot for each other, but good lord! It started to feel like I was reading drugstore romance novels.
I put down 'The Land of Painted Caves' about halfway through, when I realized it was 800 or so pages of descriptions of different caves and cave paintings. I thought Auel really missed an opportunity to explore her prehistoric world and its people; I would have liked to see the "Others" (aka homo sapiens) have more contact with the Clan (neanderthals). With much of the plot of the series centered on Ayla's Clan background and the prejudices her own people had toward them, it seemed strange that the final book just kind of leaves the Clan out except in mention. I would have also liked for Ayla to maybe hear some news of her half-Clan son during her travels... he is mentioned frequently but Auel never offers Ayla or the reader any closure.
All in all, I think 'The Land of Painted Caves' was a huge let-down for all of us Earth's Children fans. Our beloved heroine Ayla becomes mundane and dare I say dull, and as far as plot, there is simply nothing there.I was totally engrossed in the Earth's Children books and was excited to finish this, the last book in the series, but I was sadly disappointed.
